There's a lot of people in that 99% that are on the side of the 1%, even as the 1% keep their boot on the neck of those who support them. I think a lot of people fail to recognize how massively state level resources can be leveraged in these environments.
To your prior point about not attacking the cult leader directly I think if back in 2016 they had focused on broadcasting THAT Russia interfered with the election and was massively spreading disinformation and not so much on the outcome of the interference we'd have had a much better shot at getting folks to recognize the threat. By focusing much of the discussion on hiw it may have aided Trump the immediate effect was that all his brainwashed followers put their fingers in their ears and hummed....
I think one overarching issue that we on the left have, is that we have always relied on the idea that the truth will carry the day and therefore communication "strategy" isn't necessary.
That hasn't been true for some time now, and we have not adapted. We keep trying to live in a world where if you just point to a study or statistics that the other person will accept it. The world no longer exists. Strategy is needed, desperately, to break the cult apart.
And that leads me to my other fear: it takes work, it's not as easy as just pointing to a study or statistics. And I'm not sure that there are a lot of people out there willing to put in the work. I think we need enough people to do something similar to exactly what Russia did to the US in 2016 to MAGA now: to sow doubt, discord and chaos among them, because after all, they're a mishmash or subgroups that have plenty of antagonism among them. And I think to a large degree that's how we can break the cult: by both sowing discord and attacking their fake values.
So, then the question is, how do we get the numbers needed to make that happen? Do the Dems actually fund it? Do we try to grow a grassroots movement to do it (this is what I'm trying). I don't know.
100% agree, we need to fight fire with fire. In this case disinformation with some form of weaponized truth but it needs to be short easy to digest targeted and errode the trust they've misplaced. That ancient aliens show comes to mind, the way they just bombard the viewer with unanswerable questions and sensationalism.

Then he does something horrifying that if allowed to play out would be disastrous. Cue politicians, pundits, bloggers exc. to go rabid, the news cycle swings to full time coverage of his latest incendiary.
Then it's reversed before it's effect can be manifested. Now the oposition looks foolish to his base, they can't be bothered with details anyways so all that they see is crazy folks foaming at the mouth over Trump again, chuckle, chuckle “he's owning the libs" ha ha ha, never realizing how close he just walked us to the edge of disaster or how stupid it makes our country look.
It is a psy ops war & they’re much better at it. Of course they’ve lots of outside help. Particularly from Russia. But though we’ve lost a major battle we can still win the war. Because we’re smarter & we haven’t sold our souls to greed.
